Inspirations: From True Detective to Resident Evil

In a series of exclusive interviews, Blue Hat Studio, the two-man development team behind the upcoming forensic horror title She’s Leaving, offered fascinating insight into the creative vision, unique gameplay mechanics and deep psychological influences that are shaping their ambitious project.
The interviews with developers reveal a vision heavily influenced by gritty television dramas and classic survival games, centred around a protagonist stuggling against his own relentless fixation.
“Our protagonist, Charles, is trapped by his own obsession with proving himself right. He cannot move on, and that fixation drives everything he does… At its core, She’s Leaving is about the consequences of being unable to let go and the search for closure when obsession has taken over”.
The studio emphasises that the core emotional goal is to immerse the player in this high-stakes internal struggle. “We want players to feel the weight of the situation, as if the entire house is pressing down on them.”
A key mechanic is blood splatter analysis. The developers even researched real-world crime reports to ensure the process felt tangible, though streamlined for gameplay.
In terms of defence, the studio shared “he would realistically not have access to heavy weapons” explaining that sometimes the best defence is to simply “hide behind a dusty cabinet in the hope he does not hear you breathing“.
Blue Hat Studio shares that the game’s atmosphere is heavily influenced by TV dramas and classic horror, blending the psychological tension and subtle dialogue of True Detective, the obsession of Dexter: New Blood and the hostile, puzzle-orientated level design of Resident Evil. The studio focuses on narrative “subtlety”, aiming for a sense of dread that lingers and encourages players to form their own theories and conclusions.
