Vault Unlocked: Developer Insight to Environmental Design

Alongside these dark narrative secrets, we are unlocking a gallery of completely unseen, beautiful, dark, and vast environments below.

These are the brutal landscapes you will be surviving, navigating, and battling your way through. To give you a true insider perspective, our development team shared a breakdown of how these breathtaking regions were designed from the ground up to actively challenge you on your journey:

“

Fundamentally, we wanted to capture a raw sense of realism and the true thrill of real-world exploration. In these dark, atmospheric landscapes where vision is strictly limited, players must rely on small, flickering lights to navigate and discover the world’s secrets piece by piece.

Personally, I place immense importance on ‘transitions’ in art. We put a lot of effort into expressing a seamless visual shift, where one atmospheric mood gradually and organically evolves into another directly through gameplay.” – Project Cloud Games

Crafting a Living Canvas with Classical Lighting

The approach to environmental design moves completely away from typical medieval dark fantasy lighting tropes. Instead, modern art lighting techniques were intentionally utilised to give the world a more distinct, sophisticated look, drawing heavy inspiration from classical masters to establish the mood of the battlegrounds:

Chiaroscuro and Heavy Atmosphere (Peter Paul Rubens): To build our darkest, most oppressive zones where dangerous foes lurk, we channeled the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow found in the works of Rubens. The environment uses harsh, directional lighting cutting through dense shadow to naturally instill a sense of tension and isolation as you push forward.

Serene Melancholy (Jean-François Millet): Conversely, when transitioning into brighter areas—particularly the sun-drenched, fading landscapes of Chapter 2—the design shifts drastically. We drew deep inspiration from the serene yet moody atmosphere of Millet’s The Angelus, giving you a breathless moment of poetic beauty to catch your breath amidst the ongoing decay.
